It's kind of like the difference between the speedometer and the trip computer in a car: The former shows the instantaneous rate, the latter shows an average over an arbitrary time period. We usually call this the "Throughput" (sometimes the "Goodput" - though I think that's a dreadful term.) IPerf, NetIO, Speed et al don't actually test the Link Rate of anything they send a measured amount of data, time it and compute a statistical average. For example, 10bps "micknet" says "it takes 1/10th of a second to send one bit." It does NOT say "you can send 10 bits every second." It's a subtle distinction much misunderstood even in the IT profession (even Wikipedia has it wrong.) It described how long it takes to transmit one bit expressed as a ratio of an arbitrarily selected time interval, ie a second. ![]() The "Link Rate" is actually a temporal (time) measure not a capacity one. The Link Rate - ever erroneously called "speed" - of a network link and the results of a "speed test" (even iPerf et al) are not the same "thing." This sort of effect is one of the reasons why many of use prefer not to use web browser based tools and Internet "Speed test" sites when testing the "speed" of data networks - we prefer dedicated tools such as the aforementioned iPerf, NetIO and doubtless many other similar clones that take the web browser (and hopefully my much hated Java) out of the picture. To use a "roads" analogy, if you car is only running on two cylinders and bearly managing 20mph, no amount of "fixing" the roads is going to get you there any quicker as that's not where the problem is: You need to fix your car. If so, there's nothing you can do to "fix" this in the Wi-Fi settings/infrastructure as that's not where the "problem" is. Add in that a phone probably does not have the most powerful processors in the first place. If so, it would tend to indicated an issue with the browser and/or speed test site you are using.Ī lot of browser based plug ins are written in a (wretched) language/platform called "Java" which is a bit of a resourse hog and is not very efficient. It can monitor your data traffic for around a month and shows daily data usage in notification space. For clarity, are you saying you run both an "app" and browser based "speed test" on the same phone and observe significantly different results.? It has customization options and it also shows ping which is used to display network stability. It shows real-time internet speed and is battery efficient. Network Speed can be used not only to show internet speed on the status bar but also on floating widgets. Network Speed-Internet Speed Meter- Indicator This would help us to identify not only in which part of the day our data is used the most but also show us whether WiFi is used more or Mobile network.Ĭheck Out: Internet Speed Meter 4. Internet Speed Meter shows network usage in four categories like day time WiFi, nighttime WiFi, daytime mobile, and nighttime mobile. Internet Speed Meter like the above two apps tracks the past data usage of 30 days and one thing that differs it from the two is that it provides a feature to switch between light and dark themes. It is a battery efficient app and doesn’t occupy any significant storage space on your device.Ĭheck Out: Live Net Speed Meter 3. Live Net Speed meter doesn’t require any sort of special permission and it gives you an Ad-free experience. I recommend using this app because it not only has a clean UI but also tracks data usage for 30 days. Live Net Speed Meter is a very light app of only 90 kb and it doesn’t consume a significant amount of battery. The paid version is also available if you are willing to purchase it.Ĭheck Out: Internet Speed Meter Lite 2. It has separate stats for mobile and WiFi Networks. It also shows you the daily data traffic usage in the notification bar. The best part about the Internet Speed Meter Lite app is that it is Ad-free and battery-efficient. ![]() It displays your internet speed in the status bar and shows data consumed in the notification bar.
